The Katsina State Police Command has successfully intercepted a large cache of arms and ammunition, thwarting what authorities described as a major smuggling attempt that could have fueled criminal activities in the state.
At about 4:35 a.m. on Monday, operatives on routine patrol along the Ingawa–Karkarku axis flagged down a Volkswagen Golf with registration number RSH 528 BY ABJ. On inspection, officers discovered a deadly cargo consisting of a General-Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, and 232 rounds of PKT ammunition carefully concealed in the vehicle.
Two suspects identified as Abdulsalam Muhammad (25) and Aminu Mamman (23), both from Baure village in Safana Local Government Area, were immediately apprehended. Preliminary investigations suggest the arms were being ferried from Jigawa State to Safana in Katsina, raising concerns about their intended use and the network behind the smuggling operation.
The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, commended the vigilance of the police officers, stressing that such seizures are critical in curbing banditry, terrorism, and gun-running syndicates across the North-West. He assured that thorough investigations are ongoing to trace the origin, financiers, and intended recipients of the deadly consignment.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government reiterated its support to security agencies, pledging to sustain collaborative efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
