The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday night convened an emergency meeting with stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his residence in Abuja. The closed-door session, which drew party leaders from all 36 states and the FCT, centered on pressing issues ahead of the party’s planned national convention.
Wike, in his address, warned that the upcoming convention would be rendered invalid unless six critical demands were met. The former Rivers State governor outlined the conditions as follows:
- Fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states — in compliance with existing court rulings.
- Urgent conduct of a new South East Zonal Congress.
- Respect for the South South Congress outcome held in Calabar, which has already been upheld by the courts.
- Conduct of the Ekiti LGA congresses in line with judicial pronouncements.
- Rejection of micro-zoning of party offices, beyond the general zoning arrangement adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
- Retention of the nationalchairmanship position in the North Central, consistent with the zoning formula agreed at the 2021 convention.
The minister emphasized that the party’s survival and internal stability depended on adhering strictly to these demands, which he described as necessary for fairness, justice, and compliance with legal precedents.
While details of the deliberations that followed were not made public, sources at the meeting confirmed that several party leaders expressed concern over the possibility of internal disputes derailing preparations for the national convention.
The PDP is expected to issue an official statement in the coming days, clarifying its position on Wike’s six-point demands.
