African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has accused the Department of State Services of recruiting protesters to create disorder in Sokoto ahead of the party’s campaign flag-off.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Atiku alleged that the DSS leadership was mobilising people to stage protests so that the APC-controlled state government could impose a curfew and prevent the rally from holding . He claimed protesters were assembled at an office behind Zenith Bank on Koko Road and dispatched in trucks to key locations, including a roundabout, where commuters were being threatened and in some cases beaten .
“This is not intelligence work. It is political interference dressed in official uniform,” Atiku said, calling on officers involved to return to impartial service . He also alleged that public facilities meant for all parties had been blocked and logistical support withheld, describing the actions as deliberate attempts to deny the ADC a level playing field .
The former vice president said the campaign would proceed as scheduled and that he would personally lead the rally in Sokoto. He urged residents to remain peaceful and called on security agencies to protect participants without favour .
Atiku further accused the Tinubu administration of weakening opposition politics, alleging a plot to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state, and criticised the rising cost of living, promising to make life affordable if elected .
The ADC’s Sokoto campaign flag-off had earlier been postponed from October 31 to November 4 amid allegations that hotels were pressured to deny accommodation to party delegates, claims the state government denied .
