Gunmen on Friday attacked the convoy of former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, after setting a local office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ablaze.
The attack occurred shortly after Amaechi arrived in his hometown to complete his electronic registration as a member of the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reports indicate that suspected armed thugs had earlier mounted roadblocks along the Ubima–Omuanwa road, preventing buses conveying ADC supporters from accessing the community.
The assailants had reportedly set fire to the ADC ward office in Ubima the night before the incident, destroying party property and materials.
As Amaechi’s convoy attempted to enter the community, the gunmen allegedly opened fire and tried to prevent the former minister from proceeding to his residence.
Security operatives attached to Amaechi’s convoy reportedly engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing the assailants to flee into nearby bushes.
Witnesses said the attackers also fired several shots within the community, with bullets reportedly hitting the gate of Amaechi’s family residence during the incident.
No casualties were immediately confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
Addressing supporters after the attack, Amaechi called for calm and urged security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
He also commended security operatives, including the police and other agencies, for their response during the attack.
