The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nasarawa State has suspended its State Chairman, Godwin Alaku Williams, over allegations of anti-party activities and actions deemed inimical to the party’s unity and growth.
The suspension, which is for an initial period of 14 days, was announced following a meeting of the party’s Transitional Leadership Team (TLT) held in Keffi. Party officials said the decision was taken to allow a disciplinary panel investigate multiple allegations levelled against the chairman.
According to the ADC leadership in the state, Williams is accused of refusing to recognise the party’s National Working Committee, obstructing the integration of new coalition members into the party’s structure, and writing petitions to security agencies and INEC against fellow party officials, describing them as impostors.
The party further alleged that the suspended chairman set up parallel party structures, interfered with the establishment of ADC offices at state, local government and ward levels, and disrupted the ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise, contrary to directives from the national leadership.
To prevent a leadership vacuum, the ADC appointed Paul Magaji Ajeh, former State Secretary, as Acting State Chairman, while Umar A. Babayaro was named Acting Secretary. A five-member disciplinary committee, chaired by Barrister Hassan Yakubu, was also constituted to investigate the allegations and submit its report within the suspension period.
However, Williams has rejected the suspension, insisting that he remains the legitimate chairman of the party in Nasarawa State until the expiration of his tenure. He questioned the authority of those who announced his suspension, claiming they lack the constitutional backing to remove him, and alleged that the move is part of a plot to weaken the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has exposed deepening internal divisions within the ADC in Nasarawa, at a time when opposition parties are repositioning for future elections. Party insiders say the outcome of the disciplinary process could determine whether the ADC emerges united or further fragmented in the state.
As investigations continue, attention is now on the national leadership of the ADC to see whether it will intervene to restore stability or endorse the actions taken by the state leadership.
