A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Austin Obla, has alleged that Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, has been betrayed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving his political fate over the ongoing impeachment threats hanging on the judiciary.
Obla said the hope Governor Fubara once had that political forces within the APC would help stabilise the deepening crisis in Rivers State has collapsed, as the ruling party has allegedly withdrawn from earlier political understandings. According to him, the governor has now been left politically isolated at a critical moment.
He argued that the impeachment proceedings being threatened against Fubara have moved beyond political manoeuvring, stressing that the courts have now become the governor’s only line of defence.
Impeachment Crisis Deepens
Governor Fubara has been embroiled in a prolonged power struggle with a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, widely seen as loyal to his predecessor. The lawmakers have repeatedly threatened impeachment, accusing the governor of constitutional breaches and governance infractions.
The Assembly itself remains divided, with rival blocs claiming legitimacy, a situation that has paralysed legislative activities and heightened political tension across the state.

Obla accused the APC of abandoning its earlier posture of restraint and mediation in the Rivers crisis, alleging that shifting political calculations, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections, have reshaped alliances at both state and federal levels.
He claimed that national political interests are now being prioritised over stability in Rivers State, leaving Governor Fubara exposed to legislative pressure.

According to Obla, all political options available to the governor have been exhausted, making the judiciary the final arbiter of the crisis. He warned that any further escalation would be decided strictly through legal interpretation and court rulings rather than political compromise.
