Heavy security presence was recorded at the Kano State Government House on Monday amid growing reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is planning to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Armed security operatives were deployed at strategic points within and around the Government House, with movements reportedly restricted as a precautionary measure against possible unrest. The deployment followed heightened political tension in the state over the governor’s anticipated move, which has sparked strong reactions from rival political camps.
Sources within the Government House said the security reinforcement was ordered to prevent any breakdown of law and order, especially as supporters and opponents of the planned defection mobilised across Kano. The situation has reportedly drawn the attention of security agencies following fears of protests by loyalists of the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
The planned defection is said to have deepened the rift between Governor Yusuf and supporters of former Kano State governor and NNPP national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is widely regarded as the political godfather of the incumbent governor. Some cabinet members and senior political appointees believed to be loyal to Kwankwaso have reportedly distanced themselves from activities around the Government House in recent days.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that consultations between Governor Yusuf and key APC stakeholders are ongoing, with the defection expected to be formally announced once political alignments and security considerations are fully addressed.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Government had yet to issue an official statement confirming or denying the defection, while security operatives remained on alert at the seat of power in the state.
