Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has donated 65 brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across Delta State, in a gesture estimated to be worth about ₦9.45 billion.
The vehicles were presented on Wednesday at the Government House Asaba, during an event attended by members of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and top government officials.
The donation comprises 60 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs and five Toyota Land Cruiser (full-size) SUVs, selected to enhance mobility for monarchs, especially those serving riverine and hard-to-reach communities.
Speaking at the presentation, Governor Oborevwori said the initiative was aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, security collaboration, and peace-building, noting that traditional rulers remain critical partners in maintaining stability and conveying government policies to local communities.
According to market estimates, the Toyota Prado SUVs, valued at about ₦140 million each, amount to roughly ₦8.4 billion, while the Toyota Land Cruisers, estimated at ₦210 million per unit, total about ₦1.05 billion, bringing the overall value of the donation to approximately ₦9.45 billion.
The governor described the vehicles as tools of service rather than luxury items, urging the beneficiaries to deploy them strictly in the discharge of their traditional and community responsibilities.
Responding on behalf of the monarchs, the Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, Felix Mujakperuo, commended the governor for what he called a timely intervention, stressing that improved mobility would enhance their effectiveness in conflict resolution, community engagement, and support for security agencies.
The donation comes amid ongoing debates nationwide over government spending priorities, but the Delta State Government insists the move aligns with its broader agenda of inclusive governance and grassroots development.
