New DPO Storms Lugbe, Vows End To Crime And Police Brutality

The newly appointed Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Lugbe Police Division, CSP Ukorobo Uchenna, has hit the ground running with a bold move that has set the entire community abuzz. In what many described as an unprecedented step towards deepening police-community relations, CSP Uchenna convened a grand stakeholders’ meeting at the Lugbe Police Station, drawing together an array of community leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, transport unions, vigilante groups, civil rights advocates, and youth leaders.

The meeting, which signaled a fresh dawn for the troubled Lugbe community long plagued by crime, extortion, and mistrust between security operatives and residents, saw the DPO introduce himself in a manner that underscored humility, strength, and determination. He conveyed the goodwill of the Inspector General of Police and the FCT Commissioner, assuring residents that the new administration in Lugbe Division is committed to ensuring peace, prosperity, and above all, safety of lives and property.

With fiery words that resonated deeply with the crowd, CSP Uchenna declared that the days of police brutality, extortion, and indifference to public outcry were over. He gave a marching order to the people of Lugbe: “Report any erring officer to me directly. I am here to serve you, not to oppress you. My mandate is clear — this division will work hand in hand with the community to secure Lugbe.”

Turning his focus to the ever-controversial operations of commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators, the DPO charged their unions to take responsibility for sanitizing their ranks and ensuring discipline among their members. He specifically warned against defying the directives of the FCT Administration and the Police regarding restricted areas, particularly the highways that have become death traps due to recurring accidents. “Okada and Keke must never again be a source of tears for families in Lugbe. I want your full cooperation in identifying reckless riders and criminal elements hiding among you,” he said, eliciting loud nods from the union leaders present.

The DPO also urged the community vigilantes and civil society activists to strengthen collaboration with the police, promising that intelligence sharing and joint efforts would be the only way to stay ahead of criminals.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Lugbe, Chief Danlami, commended the new DPO for what he described as a “refreshing and reassuring approach.” In his words: “This is the first time in a long while that we are seeing a police officer of this caliber come to us with humility and sincerity. We, the traditional institution of Lugbe, are solidly behind him, because our community can only prosper in peace.”

Similarly, the Chairman of Abubakar Sadiq Mosque Lugbe, Alhaji Ismail Bakwai, pledged the support of the Islamic community, stressing that the DPO’s words reflect true leadership. “Our faith teaches us to stand for justice and peace. The police, under this new DPO, have shown that they are ready to work with us and not against us. We will support his vision wholeheartedly, because security is the foundation of worship and development,” he declared.

The youth, represented by the Deputy National President of the Nigerian Youth Organization, Comrade Nasir Doka, also threw their weight behind the initiative. “Young people are often the victims of both crime and police harassment. Today, CSP Uchenna has assured us that things will be different. We will work with him, and we will also hold him accountable to his promises. This is the partnership we have been waiting for,” Doka said.

By the end of the meeting, it was clear that Lugbe has entered a new chapter. The once strained relationship between the police and residents seems to be softening under the fresh approach of CSP Uchenna, whose bold declarations and openness to collaboration have earned him the trust of stakeholders from all walks of life.

For many in Lugbe, the message was clear: the new DPO has not only come to command, but to serve and to transform. With his commitment to end brutality, curb crime, and unite the community under a shared vision of safety, Lugbe may well be on the path to becoming a model of police-community partnership in the FCT.
