Kano – In a bold move to uphold academic integrity, Bayero University Kano (BUK) has expelled 57 students and rusticated eight others for involvement in examination malpractice, the university announced following its 427th Senate meeting held on September 10, 2025.
The disciplinary actions cut across multiple faculties, including Education, Engineering, Allied Health Sciences, Social and Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and the School of Postgraduate Studies. Reports indicate that offenses ranged from using unauthorized materials during exams, impersonation, to collaborative cheating in high-stakes examinations. Notably, some students in the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Postgraduate Studies were implicated in the most serious cases, leading to immediate expulsion.
Eight other students have been rusticated, receiving suspensions ranging from one to two semesters, while two students were cleared of wrongdoing. One case has been deferred for further investigation by the Senate Business Committee.
A spokesperson for the university emphasized that these measures are in line with the General Examination and Academic Regulations (GEAR), aimed at maintaining BUK’s academic standards. “The Senate remains committed to deterring academic dishonesty and ensuring that every graduate of this institution earns their degree through hard work and integrity,” the spokesperson said.
This decisive action comes amid growing concerns across Nigerian universities about examination malpractice, which experts say undermines the credibility of academic qualifications. By taking such a stern stance, BUK is sending a clear message: cheating will no longer be tolerated, and the pursuit of excellence will remain non-negotiable.
