PORT HARCOURT – The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) on Saturday conferred Honourary Doctorate Degrees on prominent Nigerians, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The high-profile honours were awarded during the university’s grand 50th Anniversary celebration, which coincided with its 35th Convocation Ceremony. The theme of the convocation lecture was "The Role of Universities in Nation Building", a subject that resonated with the institution’s longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s academic and national development.
Other distinguished honourees included former Katsina State Governor and current Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Aminu Masari, as well as the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The awards were conferred in recognition of the recipients' contributions to national development, public service, education, and institutional support.
Wike, an alumnus and former governor of Rivers State, expressed gratitude to the university, describing the honour as a "deeply personal and symbolic recognition" of his journey from the classroom to national service. He pledged continued support for the education sector.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in her acceptance remarks, commended UNIPORT for its role in shaping minds and fostering unity. She described education as the bedrock of national prosperity and urged Nigerian youths to embrace learning and innovation.
The ceremony brought together academics, politicians, traditional rulers, and stakeholders in the education sector, underlining UNIPORT’s status as a critical pillar in Nigeria’s intellectual landscape.
