ABUJA, July 26, 2025 — In a bold political move that could reshape Nigeria's future, top leaders of the National Political Consultative Group (North) converged in Abuja today for a high-level consultative meeting aimed at redefining the North’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The closed-door gathering, still ongoing at press time, has brought together influential northern stakeholders—including former governors, senators, traditional rulers, technocrats, and youth leaders—under one roof to deliberate on urgent socio-political issues threatening the region’s stability and development.
At the heart of the meeting is the growing insecurity, worsening poverty levels, youth unemployment, and political alienation of the region in recent national policies. The group expressed concern that if urgent action is not taken, the North may lose its historic leadership role in Nigeria’s political space.
Speaking at the meeting, a prominent member of the group emphasized that the time had come for the North to “speak with one voice and reassert its relevance in national affairs.” He added that the forum aims to build consensus around a credible political agenda that would protect northern interests and ensure the region remains a key player in the 2027 elections.
In a significant development, it was confirmed that the group had, during its last meeting in Abuja, adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its preferred political platform for the 2027 general elections. Today's meeting is expected to build on that strategic move by fine-tuning plans for grassroots mobilization, coalition-building, and candidate selection.
Sources close to the gathering revealed that deliberations are also touching on the need for a regional economic blueprint, improved security coordination, and a unified front in party politics ahead of possible mergers or further political realignments.
A communiqué is expected to be issued at the end of the meeting outlining key resolutions and action plans.
