The House of Representatives has called on key federal agencies to immediately develop and implement a comprehensive reintegration plan for Nigeria’s estimated 3.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).
This call followed a motion moved by Hon. Felix Nwaeke, who stressed the urgent need for coordinated efforts to restore dignity and stability to displaced Nigerians scattered across various camps nationwide.
In a resolution adopted during plenary, the House mandated the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to conduct thorough assessments of all IDP camps. The lawmakers further urged these agencies to deploy enhanced support measures, including targeted cash interventions, food distribution, psychological counseling, and skills acquisition programs to aid reintegration and recovery.
According to Nwaeke, “Displaced citizens deserve not only relief but a pathway back to normal life. Reintegration must be a national priority, not an afterthought.”
The House also emphasized the importance of long-term planning and community-based strategies to prevent protracted displacement and reduce dependency on humanitarian aid.
