The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has raised concerns over the increasing circulation of adulterated lubricants and engine oils across the country, warning of the grave consequences such products pose to vehicles, machinery, and the nation’s economy.
Speaking at a sensitisation workshop in Osogbo, the Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders to join hands in combating the menace. He noted that the prevalence of substandard engine oil significantly shortens the lifespan of engines, escalates maintenance costs, reduces efficiency, and ultimately undermines industrial productivity.
Dr. Okeke urged manufacturers, distributors, and consumers to insist on certified, high-quality lubricants that meet regulatory standards. He also encouraged reporting of suspicious products, stressing that a collective approach is essential to sanitizing the market and protecting consumers.
“The fight against fake and adulterated engine oil is not the sole responsibility of SON; it is a national concern. We need to protect our economy and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicles and machines that drive our development,” he said.
SON reiterated its commitment to enforcing quality standards, conducting market surveillance, and supporting legitimate businesses through technical guidance and certification.
