The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its stance against the practice of jungle justice, urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. This warning comes in light of recent events, including the arrest of a security guard implicated in an extrajudicial killing.
Highlighting the detrimental effects of jungle justice on the country's criminal justice system, the Force emphasized the need for adherence to legal processes. A recent incident reported to the Itire Divisional Police Headquarters in Lagos State serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by vigilantism. The arrest of a vandal by a concerned citizen escalated into a fatal encounter orchestrated by a security guard, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator on charges of murder.
The Nigeria Police Force condemned such acts, labeling them as criminal offenses and serious violations of human rights. Stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law, the Force emphasized that jungle justice undermines the authority of legitimate institutions and perpetuates a cycle of violence and lawlessness.
The statement issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, on April 1st, 2024, serves as a clarion call to communities to reject vigilantism and uphold the principles of democracy, human rights, and equality through fair and transparent legal processes. By collectively condemning jungle justice, Nigerians can pave the way for a more just and equitable society.
