United States authorities have disclosed initial insights into the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Access Holdings Plc's Group CEO, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, son, and former Nigerian Exchange Group Plc's chairperson, Abimbola Ogunbanjo. Preliminary investigations suggest wintry weather conditions as a potential contributing factor to the incident.
The crash, which occurred near the Nevada border in California, sent shockwaves through the aviation community, prompting swift response from investigative bodies.
During a media briefing, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Michael Graham outlined the ongoing efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the crash. Graham emphasized the meticulous collection of evidence at the crash site, underscoring the importance of considering all plausible factors.
"Witness reports indicate rain and wintry conditions prevailing at the time of the crash," Graham revealed. However, he cautioned that the investigation was still in its early stages, with further analysis required to ascertain the precise sequence of events.
Complicating the inquiry, the helicopter involved in the crash lacked cockpit voice and flight data recorders, commonly known as black boxes, which provide crucial insights into flight operations.
"The absence of these recording devices poses challenges in piecing together the events leading up to the crash," Graham acknowledged.
The investigation, spearheaded by NTSB, encompasses a comprehensive review of the helicopter's airworthiness, maintenance records, operational procedures, meteorological conditions, and air traffic control communications.
Parties involved in the investigation include the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Orbic Air LLC, the company operating the helicopter, and the French aviation accident investigation agency, BEA, acting as an accredited representative due to the aircraft's manufacturer being based in France.
Meanwhile, Access Holdings Plc mourned the loss of its esteemed CEO and his family in a statement issued by Group Company Secretary, Sunday Ekwochi. The company expressed profound sadness at the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of all those affected.
As investigators delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the crash, the aviation community remains vigilant, striving to enhance safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future.
