In a surprising move, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, recently appointed an eleven-man security committee, drawing criticism from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). The organization accuses the governor of excluding Muslims from the committee, raising concerns about the inclusivity and effectiveness of the security measures.
MURIC's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, expressed his concerns, stating, "The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has constituted an 11-man security committee. However, all members of the committee are Christians." According to Akintola, this decision lacks tact, diplomacy, and parliamentary behavior, portraying the governor as unprepared for addressing the security challenges facing the state.
He further remarked, *"For a state facing one of the worst security threats in the country, Governor Mutfwang has just exposed himself as unprepared for lasting peaceful settlement of the ongoing crisis in Plateau. All he cares about is how to eliminate Muslims and Fulanis from the state."* MURIC strongly condemned the committee's composition, labeling it as parochial, archaic, and prebendal, questioning the objectivity of such a highly partisan group.
The organization asserted that the governor's approach to the security committee is indicative of his alleged anti-Muslim stance. *"It is also a declaration of total war on Muslims in the state,"* Akintola added. MURIC emphasized the importance of inclusivity in addressing the Plateau crisis, calling for the governor to carry all stakeholders along for a genuine and lasting peace.
Highlighting the committee members' religious affiliations, Akintola stated, *"The Committee has AVM Napoleon Bali (rtd) and Jatau himself as Chairman and secretary respectively. All remaining nine members are also Christians."* MURIC expressed concern that such a composition could compromise the objectivity and effectiveness of the security committee.
In a pointed analogy, Akintola likened Governor Mutfwang's approach to a pianist using only one key color, emphasizing the need for diversity in tackling complex issues. He concluded, *"Neither the governor nor the indigenes can deceive Nigerians. Not anymore. Like Joshua Dariye before him who declared that Plateau State is a Christian state, like Jonah Jang who supervised the killing of a large number of Muslims under him, Mutfwang has failed in state craft and fallen short of the grace of leadership."*
