In a startling development, President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action, suspending Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, following allegations of a N585 million scandal within the ministry.
According to a statement from Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu, the suspension underscores the president's commitment to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability in managing the nation's resources. The move comes as part of a decisive effort to address potential financial improprieties.
President Tinubu has instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The suspended Minister is directed to cooperate fully with the investigating authorities and hand over her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry during the inquiry.
In a proactive step, a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been established. This panel aims to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture of social investment programs, with the goal of instituting reforms that eliminate institutional weaknesses. The objective is to ensure that disadvantaged households benefit exclusively and to rebuild public confidence in these initiatives.
