Progressives from all walks of life have converged in the popular unity fountain in the center of Nigeria's capital, Abuja for an open dialogue in commemoration of the June 12.
June 12 is an important day in the history of Nigeria's democracy, being the date of the annulled Nigeria's free and fairest election won by Late Kashimawo Moshood Abiola by the military junta of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
The events around June 12, the elections, the annulment and subsequent imprisonment of the winner of the election by General Babangida set the stage for the struggle for return to democracy in Nigeria.
This struggle bear fruits and on May 29, 1999, Nigeria once again returned to democracy with another Ex- General, Olusegun Obasanjo returning as an elected democratic President.
From the swearing in of President Obasanjo democracy day was celebrated on the 29th of may every year, until President Muhammadu Buhari made the historic change in 2020, making June 12 democracy day.
Today is Tinubu's first June 12 day as a President and Commander in chief of the federal republic of Nigeria, a country he was hitherto a fugitive from justice for June 12 and the enthronement of democracy in Africa's largest economy.
