President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s economy has recovered from the brink of bankruptcy and that security operations are yielding improved results through stronger coordination among security and intelligence agencies. The President made the assessment known through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke to State House correspondents on Tuesday after leading the National Communications Team to a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Idris disclosed that the engagement, which included the Presidential Media Team and heads of information agencies such as the News Agency of Nigeria, Nigerian Television Authority, Voice of Nigeria and the National Orientation Agency, reviewed public perception of government policies and enabled the President to provide guidance on the administration’s communication strategy. According to the minister, the meeting also allowed the communication team to relay citizens’ reactions to government policies while strengthening public communication between the government and the people.
The President maintained that his administration’s economic reforms, which have included fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation, tax restructuring and revenue reforms since 2023, were beginning to produce tangible results and position Nigeria for sustained growth. Idris quoted the President as saying the economy had turned the corner, adding that the economic turmoil that was once feared had been cleared. The minister also noted that the President expressed confidence that security operations were improving despite persistent challenges facing parts of the country, attributing the improved synergy among security and intelligence agencies to Tinubu’s leadership and determination to restore peace across the nation.
On media relations, Idris said Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom while urging journalists to exercise responsibility in reporting, adding that freedom must come with responsibility. The minister further disclosed that the President called for stronger collaboration with the media to combat fake news, misinformation and disinformation, particularly with the growing influence of artificial intelligence. The President also stressed the need for sustained engagement with Nigerians to ensure government policies were clearly understood and that public feedback informed decision-making.
The President’s assessment comes amid mixed reactions from political parties and civil society, with some opposition groups arguing that persistent inflation, rising cost of living and insecurity have diminished public trust in the administration. However, the government has maintained that the difficult reforms were necessary to rescue the economy from fiscal strain and that the country is now on a sound footing, with economic indicators pointing in a positive direction and security operations being restructured for greater efficiency.
