Security operatives have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing campaign against criminal elements in the South-East following the discovery of a large arms cache allegedly linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Enugu State.
The operation was carried out by troops of the 82 Division Garrison under Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Enugu State Command, as part of the ongoing Operation Eastern Sanity II aimed at strengthening peace and security across the region.
According to military authorities, the operation was conducted on June 9, 2026, following credible intelligence obtained from previously arrested suspects believed to be affiliated with IPOB and ESN. Acting on the intelligence, security personnel launched a targeted follow-up operation in the Gariki area of Enugu South Local Government Area.
During the raid, troops uncovered a concealed arms depot hidden inside a zinc structure that had been disguised as a piggery. A detailed search of the location led to the recovery of a significant quantity of weapons, ammunition, and other military-grade equipment.
Items recovered from the hideout included General Purpose Machine Guns, an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, a tear gas gun with cartridges, several AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
Military sources stated that all recovered weapons, ammunition, and suspects arrested in connection with the operation have been handed over to the DSS Enugu State Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The authorities described the success as a reflection of effective intelligence gathering and strong inter-agency cooperation among security agencies operating in the region. They noted that the operation represents another step in efforts to dismantle criminal and terrorist networks threatening public safety and national unity.
Operation UDO KA reiterated its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against violent groups and ensuring the protection of lives and property across the South-East. Security agencies also appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
