The Kebbi State Government has responded to claims by Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, who alleged that his vocal criticism of insecurity in the state was the reason he was denied the All Progressives Congress ticket for the upcoming election.
The government described the senator’s assertion as misleading, stating that the loss of his ticket was a matter of democratic choice. Maidoki had stated that his relationship with the state government soured after he repeatedly raised the issue of bandit attacks in the Kebbi South Senatorial District. However, in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, the government argued that insecurity is a collective responsibility, not a political tool.
The government questioned the senator's performance in office, noting that if combating insecurity was his primary mandate, the people were entitled to assess his achievements before deciding whether to renew his mandate. The administration further dismissed any suggestion that the governor had influenced the primary election, insisting that the governor respects the democratic will of party members and stakeholders.
While the government pointed to its own record of improving security and enabling residents to return to their farms, Senator Maidoki has since defected to the African Democratic Congress. He remains insistent that the ruling party’s primary process was flawed and that he will seek re-election on his new party’s platform.
