Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has come to the defence of the President’s approach to regional security incidents, arguing that political opponents and media critics often apply inconsistent standards when assessing presidential visits.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Bwala noted that the timing and location of official trips are frequently politicized, even when such trips are genuinely aimed at showing solidarity with affected communities.
He illustrated his point by contrasting reactions to hypothetical presidential movements. According to Bwala, had President Tinubu traveled to Oyo State following an incident, the same opposition voices would have accused him of acting only because it is Yoruba land. Conversely, if he visited Jos, they would dismiss it as a brief airport stopover, and if he went to Benue, they would claim he failed to reach the actual site.
“What if the President had gone to Oyo State? The media and opposition would say, ‘You see, he quickly went there because it is Yoruba land.’ But if he goes to Jos, they say he only stopped at the airport. If he goes to Benue, they say he didn’t visit the location,” Bwala remarked.
He called for a more objective and balanced evaluation of government actions, emphasizing that public officials often face conflicting expectations and that decisions should be judged by their intent and impact on national unity rather than through purely political lenses.
