The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially cleared three prominent aspirants to participate in its presidential direct primaries scheduled to hold on Monday across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The contenders approved by the party’s presidential screening committee are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and renowned economist Hayatu-Deen Mohammed.
According to reports, the ADC leadership also cleared 80 governorship aspirants, 109 senatorial aspirants, and 513 House of Representatives hopefuls as preparations intensify for what party officials described as a nationwide grassroots-driven nomination process.
Party sources disclosed that the presidential primary election will be conducted through a direct voting system in all wards nationwide, allowing registered party members to participate in choosing the party’s standard bearer for the 2027 presidential election.
The development comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of 2027, with the ADC positioning itself as a major opposition platform following recent coalition movements involving key political figures across the country.
Political observers say the emergence of heavyweight contenders within the ADC could significantly reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the next general election, especially as internal party primaries begin to gather momentum nationwide.
