Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country to immediately suspend preparations and public sensitisation activities for the proposed voter revalidation exercise earlier slated to begin on April 13, 2026.
The directive, which was communicated internally to state offices, effectively puts on hold what was expected to be a key component of INEC’s early preparations for the 2027 general elections. The revalidation exercise had been announced as part of efforts to clean up and update the national voter register, including verifying existing voters’ details and possibly removing invalid or duplicate entries.
Although INEC has not publicly provided detailed reasons for the sudden suspension, the move comes amid growing concerns and criticisms from various stakeholders. Notably, the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria had warned that the exercise, if not carefully implemented, could trigger political tension and disenfranchisement, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria. Civil society organisations and political actors had also raised questions about the timing, logistics, and potential implications for voter inclusion.
Sources within the commission indicate that the suspension may allow INEC to conduct further consultations with stakeholders, review its strategy, and address concerns before proceeding. There are also indications that legal, logistical, and financial considerations may have influenced the decision.
The proposed revalidation was seen as part of broader electoral reforms aimed at strengthening the credibility of Nigeria’s voter database. However, critics feared it could create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters if not properly managed, especially in rural areas where access to registration centres remains limited.
INEC is yet to announce a new date or provide clarity on whether the exercise will be modified, replaced, or fully integrated into the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) framework already in place.
The development introduces a degree of uncertainty into the commission’s early election planning cycle, as attention now shifts to how INEC will balance voter register integrity with inclusiveness ahead of the 2027 polls.
