Media entrepreneur and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has weighed in on recent remarks by Mohammed Bello El-Rufai concerning former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives and son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, had referenced a statement credited to Atiku in which the former vice president asserted that he commands greater political support in Northern Nigeria than key figures such as Aminu Tambuwal and Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as El-Rufai himself.
Reacting via his official Instagram page on Thursday, Momodu described Bello El-Rufai’s position as candid and reflective of political realities. He characterized the lawmaker’s statement as “bold, honest and factual,” aligning himself with the view that Atiku remains a dominant political figure in the North.
Momodu further argued that following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku has emerged as one of the most influential Northern politicians, both within Nigeria and on the international stage. According to him, Atiku’s enduring relevance is rooted in decades of political engagement, strategic relationship-building, and resilience in the face of criticism.
He noted that the former vice president’s extensive networks across the country and beyond have reinforced his standing, describing his political journey as one marked by patience, consistency, and deliberate efforts at nation-building. Momodu also highlighted Atiku’s role in mentoring younger politicians and fostering alliances without imposing conditions, which he said has contributed to his broad appeal.
The exchange underscores ongoing political realignments and debates over influence ahead of future electoral contests, particularly within Northern Nigeria, where key actors continue to position themselves for relevance in the evolving political landscape.
