The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has defended the payment of outstanding salary arrears to traditional rulers, pushing back against criticism from the leadership of the Osun State House of Assembly. The party said the decision followed due process and was carried out by reinstated local government chairmen acting within the law and in line with their welfare responsibilities.
According to the party, recent court rulings affirming local government autonomy empower councils to meet statutory obligations, including the payment of approved entitlements to monarchs. The APC insisted that the payments were neither arbitrary nor politically motivated, but a lawful discharge of duty to traditional institutions recognised by the state.
Also speaking, the Osun State chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Samuel Idowu, warned against politicising the welfare of traditional rulers. He said monarchs’ salaries are legitimate entitlements and stressed that local councils would not subject them to “avoidable hardship or harassment,” regardless of prevailing political disagreements.
