The Senate has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s prolonged security challenges, including armed banditry, insurgency, kidnapping and widespread destruction of property, will come to an end in 2026.
The assurance was given during plenary as lawmakers deliberated on the persistent insecurity affecting several parts of the country, particularly the North-West, North-Central and North-East.
According to the Senate, the continued killings, abductions and displacement of communities remain unacceptable, stressing that restoring peace and safety across the country is a national priority.
Lawmakers said the National Assembly would closely examine the 2026 budget with the aim of giving stronger financial support to the military and other security agencies. They noted that improved funding would enhance operational capacity, intelligence gathering, equipment procurement and the welfare of security personnel.
The Senate also called for improved coordination among security agencies and urged the Federal Government to ensure that funds appropriated for security are effectively and transparently utilised to achieve tangible results.
The statement comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with security remaining a central national concern. The Senate said it would continue to work with the executive arm of government to ensure that Nigerians can live, work and travel safely, expressing optimism that the country would see the end of banditry and related crimes in 2026 “by the grace of God.”
