Former Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, has cautioned that the growing wave of defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress does not automatically translate into electoral victory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Na’Allah said that while defections may strengthen party structures on paper, they do not replace the critical role of performance, public trust and tangible governance outcomes in determining how Nigerians vote.
Speaking during a television interview, the former lawmaker noted that electoral success is ultimately decided by citizens who assess how well a party and its leaders have addressed their everyday concerns, including the economy, security and social welfare.
According to him, politicians who defect often bring political influence and local networks, but such advantages can quickly evaporate if voters feel disconnected from government policies or dissatisfied with leadership outcomes.
He stressed that history has shown that parties which rely heavily on defections without improving governance records risk being rejected at the polls, adding that Nigerians are becoming increasingly discerning in their electoral choices.
Na’Allah’s remarks come amid sustained political realignments ahead of 2027, with several opposition figures and office holders switching parties as permutations intensify. The trend has fueled speculation about the APC’s electoral prospects, particularly as it seeks to consolidate power at both federal and state levels.
However, the former senator maintained that only consistent performance and credible engagement with the electorate can secure lasting political dominance, warning that defections should not be mistaken for automatic popular support.
He urged political leaders to focus less on numbers and more on delivering results that resonate with the public, describing governance, not party switching, as the true test awaiting all political parties in 2027.
