The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The meeting, which took place at Jonathan’s office in Maitama, was attended by key members of the party’s national leadership. Though no official statement was issued at the end of the engagement, party insiders said discussions centred on the lingering internal crisis within the PDP and ongoing efforts to stabilise and reposition the opposition party ahead of forthcoming elections.
Sources familiar with the talks disclosed that the Turaki-led NWC briefed the former president on recent developments in the party, including leadership disputes, factional disagreements and strategies for rebuilding unity across states. Jonathan, a respected elder statesman within the PDP, was also said to have offered counsel on reconciliation and the need for internal cohesion.
The closed-door engagement comes at a critical time for the PDP, which has faced prolonged internal wrangling, defections and legal battles that have weakened its organisational strength since the 2023 general elections. With preparations gradually shifting toward the 2027 polls, party leaders are under pressure to resolve disputes and present a united front capable of challenging the ruling party.
Party officials hinted that the meeting with Jonathan is part of a broader consultation process involving senior stakeholders, former leaders and influential figures aimed at restoring confidence, enforcing discipline and strengthening the party’s structures nationwide.
The PDP leadership is expected to issue a formal communiqué outlining outcomes and next steps after consultations with other stakeholders are concluded.
