The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, marking the commencement of the second phase of the process aimed at expanding and cleaning up Nigeria’s voters’ register ahead of future elections.
The resumption follows the conclusion of the first phase of the CVR, which ended on December 10, 2025, after several months of online and physical registration nationwide. During that phase, millions of Nigerians initiated the registration process, with over 2.5 million registrations fully completed through a combination of online pre-registration and in-person biometric capture at INEC centres.
INEC said the pause between the two phases was used to carry out statutory duties required under the Electoral Act 2022, including the display of the preliminary voters’ register for public scrutiny. This allowed citizens to submit claims, objections, and corrections, as well as report cases of duplicate or ineligible registrations, including deceased persons.
With the start of the second phase, the electoral umpire has once again opened its doors to eligible Nigerians who are yet to register, those seeking to transfer their voter registration to a new polling unit, and registered voters who need to correct or update personal details such as names, dates of birth, or photographs.
INEC has reiterated that while online pre-registration remains available, physical appearance at designated registration centres is mandatory to complete the process, as biometric data capture is required before any registration can be validated.
However, the commission disclosed that the CVR exercise is temporarily suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to ongoing electoral activities in those areas. INEC assured residents that fresh dates for resumption will be announced in due course.
The commission urged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the renewed exercise, stressing that an accurate and inclusive voters’ register is critical to strengthening democratic participation and the credibility of future elections.
INEC also called on the public to comply with guidelines at registration centres and to report any misconduct or irregularities, as it continues efforts to improve transparency, efficiency, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
