The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections as it steps up preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The assurance was given during a strategic engagement of the Commission’s leadership, where INEC emphasized that early planning, strict adherence to the law and institutional integrity would guide all activities ahead of the polls.
INEC Chairman, Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, said the Commission was determined to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process by addressing past challenges and improving public confidence in elections. He stressed that compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, respect for the rule of law and operational transparency would remain non-negotiable.
According to him, INEC has begun reviewing its internal processes, including logistics, personnel deployment, voter registration, election security and stakeholder coordination, to ensure seamless election management in 2027.
The Commission also reiterated its commitment to inclusive participation, noting that special attention would be given to young and first-time voters, persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups. Continuous voter registration and voter education programmes are expected to be intensified nationwide.
INEC further stated that election technology, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results, would continue to be refined to enhance transparency and reduce human interference in the electoral process.
Several elections scheduled before 2027, including the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections and other off-cycle polls, will serve as test runs to further fine-tune INEC’s systems and logistics.
The Commission urged political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media and voters to play their respective roles responsibly, stressing that credible elections require collective commitment.
INEC also cautioned Nigerians against misinformation, noting that official election timetables and updates would be released only through its authorised channels and in line with legal provisions.
