Murphy Omoruyi, the House of Representatives member for Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ending LP’s representation in the National Assembly from Edo State.
Announcing his decision in Benin City, Omoruyi cited protracted internal crises within the Labour Party, saying the disputes have weakened the party’s cohesion and effectiveness. He added that sustained consultations with leaders and constituents across Egor and Ikpoba-Okha informed his move, stressing that residents want a platform better positioned to address pressing local challenges.
The lawmaker pledged to remain focused on effective representation, good governance and constituency development, noting concerns such as infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment and economic pressures. He said the ADC offers a structure he believes can better support legislative advocacy and constituency engagement.
Leaders of the ADC in Edo welcomed Omoruyi’s defection, describing it as a boost to the party’s growing profile in the state and a signal of expanding national realignment ahead of future elections. Political observers say the switch underscores ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s opposition space, as lawmakers recalibrate amid leadership tussles and organisational strains in their parties.
Omoruyi, who will continue to serve in the House of Representatives, reaffirmed his commitment to bipartisan cooperation in the National Assembly while advancing projects and oversight priorities for his constituency under his new party platform.
