There are growing indications that the political standing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, may be facing fresh challenges as relations between him and President Bola Tinubu are reportedly becoming strained.
Sources familiar with developments in Abuja and Rivers State allege that Wike may be considering a defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move said to be planned for Friday, December 5, 2025. The move, observers suggest, could be connected to shifting political calculations following recent events in Rivers State.
The tension reportedly intensified after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, a decision widely interpreted as strengthening the position of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Political observers say the development appeared to reduce Wike’s influence in the state, despite his continued role at the federal level.
It is alleged that Wike made efforts to reaffirm his loyalty to the President, including reportedly encouraging pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly to pass a vote of confidence in Tinubu. However, sources claim the move did little to alter perceptions within the Presidency.
According to political insiders, concerns have allegedly been raised within Tinubu’s inner circle over Wike’s political style, with some reportedly viewing his outspoken and confrontational approach as increasingly problematic for the administration. There have also been claims, yet to be legally established, linking the minister to past controversies, including allegations of land-related disputes and corruption, all of which Wike has previously denied.
Reports of a possible mass defection involving Wike and 27 Rivers State lawmakers have also generated debate. However, prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has reportedly maintained that any lawmakers who defect may risk losing their seats, citing constitutional provisions.
Meanwhile, sources say influential figures within the ruling party, including members of the Lagos APC elders’ council, are reportedly advising President Tinubu to prioritize a working relationship with Governor Fubara, arguing that ongoing political tensions linked to Wike could be counterproductive.
As developments continue to unfold, analysts note that Wike’s political influence, once considered formidable, may be under pressure. Whether these reported moves signal a major realignment or a temporary setback remains to be seen, but the situation has added a new layer of uncertainty to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
