The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday as members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, met in Abuja to address what they described as lingering organisational challenges within the party.
The meeting, held in the nation’s capital, focused on restoring internal order, rebuilding confidence among party members, and resolving disputes arising from leadership and structural disagreements at both national and state levels.
Speaking at the meeting, the Wike-aligned BoT chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, said the body was committed to stabilising the PDP by ensuring strict adherence to the party’s constitution, internal democracy, and due process. He emphasised the need to conduct overdue state congresses in affected chapters as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots base.
According to him, unresolved congresses and leadership disputes across several states have weakened the PDP’s cohesion and electoral readiness, making urgent intervention necessary.
Also present at the meeting were key figures aligned with Wike, including former national officers, serving lawmakers, and state party leaders. The group reiterated its support for what it described as the “authentic organs” of the party, insisting that steps currently being taken are aimed at rescuing the PDP from prolonged internal instability.
The BoT meeting comes amid an intense leadership crisis following the party’s controversial national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, which produced a new National Working Committee (NWC) that Wike’s camp has consistently rejected. Since then, parallel meetings, court actions, counter-suspensions, and clashes at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja have further exposed deep divisions within the opposition party.
Political observers see the Abuja meeting as part of a broader strategy by the Wike faction to assert influence over the party’s structure, particularly at the state level, ahead of future elections.
As the crisis persists, concerns continue to grow over possible defections, prolonged litigation, and the PDP’s ability to present a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
