Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday visited the Presidential Villa, Abuja, marking his first appearance at Aso Rock since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn into office in May 2023.
The visit took place during the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, a Christian Christmas ceremony hosted by First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa. Obasanjo was one of the prominent dignitaries invited to take part in the service and read the Second Lesson from the Bible (Genesis 22:15–18), which focuses on faith, obedience, and divine covenant.
Also in attendance was former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who read the First Lesson, while the First Lady delivered the Ninth Lesson, alongside other senior government officials, clergy, and invited guests.
Notably, President Bola Tinubu was absent from the event, meaning he did not receive or interact with Obasanjo during the former president’s visit to Aso Rock.
Obasanjo’s appearance is significant, as he has largely stayed away from the Presidential Villa since the Tinubu administration began, despite being a statutory member of the Council of State. His absence from previous official engagements has often been linked to his critical public comments on governance, leadership, and national direction under the current administration.
Friday’s visit, however, appeared strictly ceremonial, with no indication of a political meeting or private discussion between the former president and officials of the Tinubu government.
The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols is an annual Christian tradition held during the Christmas season, bringing together scripture readings, hymns, and reflections, and is often attended by top government figures and national leaders.
