The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has again reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, marking the second downward adjustment in less than one week.
As of Thursday, December 4, 2025, NNPCL retail outlets reduced the price by ₦10 per litre, from ₦930 to ₦920 per litre. The new price was observed at several filling stations in Abuja, including those in Gwarimpa, along the Kubwa Expressway, and Wuse Zone 4.
The latest cut comes on the heels of an earlier reduction implemented on November 28, 2025, when the company slashed prices by ₦15 per litre. Together, the adjustments signal a sustained downward trend in petrol prices at NNPCL outlets.
Industry observers attribute the reductions largely to increased competition in Nigeria’s fully deregulated downstream petroleum sector. In particular, the growing market presence of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has intensified price rivalry, forcing major marketers, including the state-owned oil firm, to review pump prices to remain competitive.
The price moderation is seen as a relief for motorists and transport operators, who have faced months of high fuel costs following the removal of petrol subsidies. Analysts note that if competition continues and crude supply remains stable, further price adjustments may follow. However, they caution that global oil prices, exchange rate volatility, and distribution costs will remain key factors influencing future pump prices across the country.
For now, consumers are watching closely, hopeful that the emerging competition-driven pricing regime will translate into more affordable fuel nationwide, beyond major urban centres.
