Three officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists at a border checkpoint in Bakin Ruwa, along the Maje border axis in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident occurred around midnight, when heavily armed gunmen reportedly stormed the immigration checkpoint and opened fire on officers on duty. The three personnel were killed on the spot during the assault.
After the attack, the assailants set a patrol vehicle ablaze and destroyed parts of the checkpoint facility before fleeing into nearby bush paths, according to local sources familiar with the incident.
Residents of the area said the attackers arrived in large numbers and fired sporadically, causing panic within the border community. The sound of gunfire reportedly forced residents indoors as the gunmen carried out the operation before retreating unchecked.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents linked to the Lakurawa group along the Nigeria–Benin border in Bagudo LGA. In recent months, similar assaults have targeted security formations in the area, including an earlier incident in which a Customs officer was killed and official vehicles were burnt.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the killed officers have not been officially released, and there has been no formal statement from the Nigeria Immigration Service or other security agencies. Efforts to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful.
The fresh killings have once again raised concerns over the worsening security situation along Kebbi’s border communities, with residents calling for stronger security presence and improved protection for personnel deployed to high-risk locations.
The attackers have yet to be apprehended, and investigations into the incident are believed to be ongoing.
