The Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, has declared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) lacks the political strength to win the 2027 general elections unless it aligns with former Kano State governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking during a press briefing at the NNPP headquarters in Kano, Dungurawa said recent political manoeuvres by the APC—including overtures toward Kwankwaso—are signs of desperation and an admission that the party’s influence has waned both in Kano and across Nigeria.
According to him, the APC has “lost direction and focus,” and any hope of recovering its political relevance rests on courting figures with established grassroots strength such as Kwankwaso. He dismissed suggestions that recent meetings involving Kwankwaso were signs of an imminent alliance with the APC, insisting such encounters were “purely coincidental and unrelated to any formal political arrangement.”
Dungurawa also addressed criticisms surrounding Kwankwaso’s vote numbers in the 2023 presidential election, noting that the NNPP was only about seven months old at the time. He argued that the party faced limited public awareness and struggled with a ballot design that featured a faintly printed party logo. Despite these obstacles, he said Kwankwaso still secured nearly 500,000 votes in Kano alone.
He expressed confidence that with a redesigned party logo, rising public acceptance, and strengthened party structures, the NNPP is better positioned for a stronger outing in the 2027 polls.
The NNPP chair further spoke on internal party affairs, stressing that the party values loyalty and continuity. He explained that under the party’s constitution, state executive officers may serve two terms unless they defect, die, or face disciplinary action—an emphasis he said reflects NNPP’s belief in stability and disciplined leadership.
Efforts by journalists to obtain a reaction from the Kano APC leadership were unsuccessful as calls and messages were not returned at the time of filing this report.
The development adds new fuel to Kano’s already heated political landscape, where Kwankwaso’s influence continues to shape alliances and national-level calculations ahead of the next election cycle.
