The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described its forthcoming national convention, scheduled to hold on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, as a decisive moment for the sustenance of democracy and the repositioning of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with members of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, said the party remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process through transparent internal leadership selection and issue-based politics.
Ologunagba stressed that the PDP, since returning Nigeria to democracy in 1999, has consistently provided platforms for Nigerians to elect their leaders freely and fairly. He noted that the forthcoming convention is designed to reaffirm that legacy and reawaken public confidence in democratic governance.
He said, “This convention is not just a party affair; it is a reaffirmation of our belief in the people and the power of their votes. It is about rebuilding hope and setting a new agenda for national development.”
Ologunagba also contrasted the PDP’s record in governance with that of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), urging Nigerians to compare the party’s sixteen years in power with the ten years of APC’s leadership. According to him, the PDP administration achieved remarkable milestones such as debt relief, double-digit economic growth, low inflation, and massive investments in education and health, which he claimed have been eroded under the current government.
The Vice Chairman of the NCOC, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for meticulous preparation and adequate security during the two-day event. He revealed that the committee had been working closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and well-organized convention.
Turaki added, “The success of this convention depends largely on the efficiency and commitment of our committees, especially in maintaining security and order. We want to send a strong message that PDP remains disciplined, organized, and ready to lead Nigeria again.”
Party officials disclosed that the Ibadan convention will feature elections of new national officers, policy resolutions, and strategic planning sessions geared toward uniting members and repositioning the PDP as a viable alternative in 2027.
As Nigeria’s oldest surviving political party, the PDP believes the convention will not only define its future but also serve as a reminder that internal democracy remains the foundation for national progress and stability.
