The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has maintained that its structure remains intact, solid, and unshaken despite the resignation of Governor Douye Diri and several members of the State Assembly from the party.
In a statement issued after an emergency meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) in Yenagoa, the party, led by State Chairman Hon. Solomon Agwana, reaffirmed its unity and commitment to the PDP’s core ideals, stressing that Diri’s departure would not derail the party’s political strength or grassroots dominance.
According to the statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli, “We acknowledge the resignation of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, with utmost respect and appreciation for his service to the PDP. The Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State remains strong, united, and fully committed to the vision of inclusive governance, justice, and development. Our structures across all local government areas remain intact and functional.”
The meeting, which was chaired by Agwana, had in attendance key party executives including Deputy Chairman Hon. Ben George Odon, State Secretary Hon. Gesiye Isowo, Treasurer Elder Luke Demeoru, Women Leader Hon. Christie Ebbeli, Legal Adviser Barr. Christopher Kainga, and Zonal Vice Chairmen from the Central, East, and West senatorial districts.
Party leaders resolved to continue mobilizing loyal members and supporters at all levels, assuring that the PDP remains the dominant political force in Bayelsa. They described Diri’s resignation as a personal political decision that neither weakens the party’s base nor diminishes its relevance.
“The PDP is an institution built on strong democratic values and collective leadership. No single individual, no matter how highly placed, can shake its foundation,” the statement added.
The PDP’s firm stance comes amid speculations that Diri and his allies may be preparing to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move some political observers view as an attempt to align the state with the ruling party at the federal level.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has publicly declared his continued loyalty to the PDP, emphasizing that he remains a proud member of the party and will not follow the defection train. His position further reinforced the party’s claim that the bulk of its elected officials remain steadfast.
Former Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, also confirmed that Diri had consulted him before leaving but said he advised the governor to remain in the PDP. “I told him that the PDP gave him everything politically. There was no justifiable reason to leave,” Dickson said.
Political analysts note that the PDP’s rapid and coordinated response is designed to project stability and prevent internal panic. The party has already commenced internal reorganization and consultations with ward leaders to ensure continuous political engagement ahead of future elections.
While Diri’s next political move remains uncertain, the Bayelsa PDP appears focused on consolidating its influence, emphasizing that the party’s structure — from ward to state level — remains strong, operational, and unwavering in loyalty.
