Former Governor of Oyo State, Rashidi Ladoja, has ascended the revered throne of Ibadanland as the 44th Olubadan, in a colourful coronation that blended history, tradition, and pageantry.
The rites began at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, where he received the symbolic Akoko leaf before proceeding to the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area for the crowning ceremony. His journey to the throne will be formally sealed when Governor Seyi Makinde presents him with the staff of office at the historic Mapo Hall.
Ladoja emerged as Olubadan-designate following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025. His coronation was greeted with excitement as Ibadan residents and well-wishers thronged the venues, dressed in colourful attire befitting the occasion.
The installation drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. Political heavyweights and traditional leaders such as former Ogun Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and the Chief Imam of Ibadan also paid homage to the new monarch.
The event was heavily guarded, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Army personnel ensuring peace and security.
The Olubadan stool, renowned for its unique and orderly succession system, once again demonstrated its enduring legacy, as Ibadan welcomed a leader whose journey has spanned both the political arena and the traditional palace.
