The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Mr. Segun Imohiosen, the government explained that although the parade will no longer take place, other programmes lined up for the anniversary will proceed as planned.
Imohiosen, who did not give a specific reason for the cancellation, emphasized that the decision does not in any way diminish the significance of Nigeria’s 65th Independence celebration. He added that the Federal Government regrets any inconvenience the development may cause to Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests who had been looking forward to the event.
“The Federal Government wishes to assure all Nigerians that the cancellation of the parade does not reduce the importance of this year’s Independence Anniversary. Other activities will continue as scheduled, and we urge citizens to support the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as we work together for a greater nation,” the statement read in part.
The Independence Anniversary, themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” was expected to feature the ceremonial parade as one of its highlights. However, the government has reiterated its commitment to marking the day through other engagements and events.
This marks a rare departure from tradition, as the parade has historically been a symbolic show of unity, patriotism, and national pride. The sudden cancellation has raised questions among citizens, though officials maintain that the decision was carefully considered in the country’s interest.
