CPC State Chairmen Align With ADC After Malami Visit

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, on Tuesday received a delegation of defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) state chairmen in his Abuja office.

The delegation was led by Alhaji Umar Shuaibu — chairman of the group — and came to commiserate with Malami after an attack on his convoy in Birnin Kebbi earlier this month. The convoy attack and the ongoing police investigation have been widely reported.

What began as a solidarity visit quickly took a political turn. The state chairmen declared open alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and urged a formal resurrection of the CPC block under a stronger opposition front. Delegates accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of sidelining CPC interests within the merger and warned that smaller parties and opposition stakeholders must unite to hold the ruling party to account.

The meeting drew notable faces in addition to the state chairmen. Former Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, and former NDDC board chair Lauretta Onochie were reported to be in attendance. Malami himself acknowledged the delegation in a post on his official social media pages, praising the leadership and compassion shown by Alhaji Umar Shuaibu and other leaders present.

Delegates used the visit to level political criticisms — alleging that parts of the APC have relied on heavy-handed tactics in some areas and accusing parties of engineering instability in the FCT. They framed the upcoming FCT council elections as the first litmus test for the newly aligned coalition’s strength against the ruling party.

Organisers say the aim is to coordinate CPC remnants nationwide and work with like-minded parties to create a viable opposition platform heading into 2027.
