The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the promotion of 952 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), marking a significant development in the career progression of officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decision, approved at the Commission’s 24th Plenary Meeting held in Abuja and presided over by its Chairman, retired Inspector-General of Police Dr. Solomon Arase, reflects the PSC’s renewed commitment to merit, fairness, and due process in police promotions.
According to the PSC Chairman, Dr. Arase, while 952 officers were elevated, promotion for 179 ASPs was withheld. Out of this number, 176 had already retired from active service, while three others were confirmed deceased. He stressed that promotions would henceforth be strictly guided by merit and eligibility, ensuring that officers who meet the required criteria are duly recognized.
“The Commission will not compromise standards. We are determined to uphold discipline, transparency, and meritocracy in the Nigeria Police Force. Promotions are a reward for hard work and commitment to service, and only those qualified will benefit,” Arase said.
The PSC further noted that the promotions are part of wider reforms to boost morale, motivate personnel, and strengthen efficiency in the Force, especially at a time when the nation is battling complex security challenges.
Observers have commended the development as a morale booster for serving officers, urging the Commission to also address pending promotions in other ranks and ensure fairness across the board.
The Nigeria Police Force, with over 370,000 officers, continues to serve as the country’s primary security agency, and reforms in welfare and career progression remain critical to enhancing its effectiveness in protecting lives and property.
