The Federal Government has deactivated over 13.6 million social media accounts for violating Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms.
According to the 2024 Compliance Report jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), a total of 13,597,057 accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) were taken down.
The report further revealed that 58,909,112 offensive contents were deleted, while more than 754,000 user complaints were received and reviewed within the period. Out of these, 420,439 posts were re-uploaded following successful appeals.
Officials explained that the massive crackdown was necessary to curb the spread of harmful content, fake news, and incitement on social media platforms. The government maintained that the enforcement of the code is part of ongoing efforts to sanitize Nigeria’s digital space and protect citizens from online abuse, cybercrime, and misinformation.
The Federal Government emphasized that it will continue to work with global tech companies to ensure compliance, adding that more stringent measures may be introduced if violations persist.
