The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome assassination of its Registrar, Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran, just six months after he assumed office.
The lifeless body of the 41-year-old university administrator was discovered in the early hours of Thursday at his residence in Akure, the state capital. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious concerns, with the Ondo State Police Command confirming that the case is being treated as a targeted killing.
Spokesperson of the Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that preliminary investigations are ongoing, and efforts are in motion to apprehend those behind the heinous crime. “We received the report early Thursday and immediately deployed a team to the scene. At this moment, we suspect foul play and are treating the case as a possible assassination. The public will be kept informed as investigations progress,” Ayanlade said.
The news of his death has sent shockwaves across the university community. A statement released by the UNIMED management described the late registrar as a dedicated and visionary leader whose short time in office had already begun to make a positive impact. “Mr. Adeniran was last seen at work on Monday. His sudden and brutal death has left us deeply shaken. This is a huge loss to the institution,” the statement read.
Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran was appointed Registrar of UNIMED in January 2025. A seasoned administrator with a reputation for excellence and discipline, he had previously served in various academic and administrative capacities within the tertiary education sector.
Tributes have continued to pour in from academic stakeholders, colleagues, friends, and students, who all expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss. Meanwhile, the Ondo State Government has yet to issue an official statement, but insiders say the Governor is expected to address the matter publicly in the coming days.

Mr. Adeniran is survived by a wife and three children.
