Dino Melaye Makes Courtroom Debut as Lawyer

By Abu Ismail

Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, officially began his legal career on Friday, July 18, 2025, making his first courtroom appearance as a practicing lawyer. The high-profile politician appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja, marking his debut in active legal practice since being called to the Nigerian Bar earlier this year.

Melaye, known for his flamboyant style and vocal presence in Nigeria’s political landscape, took up the role of defense counsel in a matter listed before the court, signaling a formal transition from lawmaking to law practice.

After years in the Senate and multiple stints in public service, Melaye’s decision to pursue a legal career has drawn significant public interest. His courtroom appearance was met with curiosity and attention from lawyers, litigants, and observers who noted the former senator’s composure and engagement during proceedings.

The former lawmaker graduated from the Nigerian Law School after previously earning a law degree, and was among those called to the Bar in December 2024. He has since expressed commitment to using the law to promote justice and serve the public in new ways.

Though this marks the beginning of his journey in the legal profession, analysts say Melaye’s public visibility and political background could make him a prominent figure at the intersection of law and politics.
