The Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning to herders across the state, reiterating that open grazing remains strictly prohibited and violators risk facing severe consequences, including a three-year jail term and permanent forfeiture of their cattle.
This renewed warning comes in response to rising complaints of traffic obstruction, destruction of farmlands, and growing tension between farmers and herders in several parts of the state. Authorities say the law is necessary to maintain public order, protect agricultural investments, and preserve peace among communities.
In a statement released on Monday, the government emphasized that the Anti-Open Grazing Law of Ogun State is still in full effect and will be enforced without hesitation. Herders are advised to embrace ranching and other modern livestock management practices to avoid conflict with the law.
"Any herder caught flouting the law will be arrested, prosecuted, and upon conviction, face up to three years imprisonment. In addition, the government will seize and auction any cattle found grazing openly on public roads or private farmlands," the statement warned.
Officials further urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to support efforts to implement the law and protect local farmers from economic losses.
The government assured residents that it remains committed to ensuring a peaceful coexistence between all agricultural stakeholders in the state, and that the safety and wellbeing of both farmers and herders will be balanced within the boundaries of the law.
