The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced a staggering seizure of 1.3 billion Tramadol pills and 4.4 million bottles of Codeine between January 2024 and June 2025, with the total street value of the confiscated drugs estimated to be close to ₦1 trillion.
Chairman of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), made the disclosure while highlighting the agency’s achievements under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Marwa warned that the vast volume of illicit substances, if left unchecked, could serve as a source of funding for terrorism and organized crime.
In the same 18-month period, Marwa reported that the NDLEA seized over 5,555 tonnes of assorted drugs, arrested over 2,000 traffickers, secured 8,682 convictions, and facilitated the rehabilitation of over 24,000 drug-dependent individuals.
He also announced the establishment of seven additional rehabilitation centres, raising the national total to 37 facilities, and called on state governments, families, schools, and communities to play active roles in the ongoing war against drug abuse and trafficking.
“Our children and our future are under threat from these dangerous substances. The fight must be collective if we are to win it,” Marwa stated.
The NDLEA’s intensified crackdown and rehabilitation efforts reflect a renewed national commitment to public health and security under President Tinubu’s leadership.
